Marketing Nugget of the Day: Own Your Domain

By: Cliff Hand, President, Marketing Specific MD
One of the services that Marketing Specific MD offers, is web design. Some of our physicians need a new website from the ground up, but most already have a web presence that is either old, outdated, or just needs a fresh look. This is where we come in. Before we can move forward on an existing website, our client must provide us with the current FTP address, user name, and password to the current domain name or URL. We have had over 50% of our physicians tell us that they don't know what we are talking about, but they are sure that they own their domain. After calling their existing web developer/designer, or hosting company, they find out that they indeed do not own their domain name. All along they thought that their www.xxxxxx.com belonged to them, but they were wrong. This is where the fun begins. We have had some companies hold clients domains for ransom and then others who downright refuse to release their information at any price. This puts our client and us in a precarious situation because we are now stuck in limbo and are not able to move forward on development. At this point, our client will either stay with the existing site they have (which they obviously don't want to do), or they are forced to buy a new domain name and start over. Neither solution is optimal, but this seems to be a very ugly reality for many companies when you don't own your own site. If you don't know for sure, today is a great day to find out.
Marketing is about listening, solving, producing and enjoying the relationships we gain along the way.
